In the timeless city of Macondo, seven generations of the Buendia family struggle with love, oblivion, and their past and destiny. This is Netflix’s most expensive project in Latin America to date, and features Colombian and indigenous crews. The communities that create the props and sets for the series, 100 Years of Solitude, is one of the greatest conventions of Spanish literature. Its style is unparalleled and its scope is beyond imagination. Its characters are so well-drawn that any screenwriter would have no problem writing them for the screen. However, the seemingly insurmountable problem of adapting the novel was its time. Compressing a hundred years of family and nation history was an impossible task. Almost 60 years after its publication, the novel has found a cinematic home on Netflix. Only streaming can do it justice, and the first 2 episodes are truly promising. Excellent photography, art direction, and respect for the characters. The voice is needed to make García Márquez’s wonderful prose pop from time to time. The plot unfolds smoothly with richness and depth. I love it, I was a little skeptical that GGM’s magical world could be translated to the screen. Wall, so far, it’s a success in my book. No need to waste time scrolling endlessly – here’s the full lineup of new movies and TV shows streaming on Netflix this month.
